“IndyACT is part of a global movement to create an effective network of Marine Protected Areas covering 30% of all seas and oceans by 2030”

Why is this important?

“MPAs are an important fisheries management tool”
More than 3 billion people (40% of the world) depend on the oceans for their livelihood. At the same time, 90% of all fish stocks are fully exploited or overfished. The old way of managing our fish resources is not working. There is a growing body of science showing that establishing a network of no-take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is essential to restore the health of our oceans and seas through the “spillover effect”. The spillover effect happens when the strict protection of fish in an area lead to an over-abundance of fish that it starts to migrate or “spillover” to surrounding areas, repopulating the oceans and seas. Therefore, MPAs should become part of any fisheries management strategy, and not only to preserve biodiversity and protect endangered species.

What are we doing?

In Lebanon, more than 100,000 individuals depend on fisheries resources. Therefore, we aim to establish an effective network of MPAs covering 30% of Lebanese waters to restore fish stocks for the benefit of fishermen and all Lebanese. IndyACT is working with a growing number of civil society organizations, government agencies, universities, and private companies to achieve this goal. IndyACT is also part of a regional coalition to protect 30% of the Mediterranean.
