Ammiq Wetland: Updates

Significant progress has been made to strengthen conservation efforts and enhance visitor engagement at the Ammiq Wetland. A key milestone was the successful completion of a comprehensive three-day Biodiversity Monitoring Training for the reserve’s management team. This intensive program combined theoretical knowledge with practical field application, equipping rangers with essential skills in ecosystem monitoring, data collection, and environmental assessment.

The training covered ecological principles, monitoring methodologies, and hands-on exercises such as camera trapping, soil sampling, and bird monitoring. Experts from national organizations contributed to the sessions, providing practical insights into avifauna observation and rapid soil assessment techniques. These efforts have reinforced the technical capacity of the team, ensuring more effective and consistent biodiversity monitoring within the reserve.

In parallel, the project has engaged an agroecology expert to conduct a feasibility and needs assessment for sustainable agricultural practices in farms surrounding the wetland. This initiative aims to promote environmentally responsible farming methods that support both conservation goals and local livelihoods.

Beyond ecological monitoring, the project is also focused on improving the visitor experience. A new visitor center is currently under development, where local products will be showcased, allowing visitors to connect more deeply with the cultural and ecological richness of the reserve. Additionally, a dedicated website for Ammiq Wetland is being developed to increase visibility, accessibility, and public awareness.

Together, these initiatives reflect a holistic approach to conservation, combining science, community engagement, and sustainable development.
